YIAGA Africa engages political stakeholders, advocates electoral reform

Civil Society Organisation Yiaga Africa, has called on Kaduna state Government, political parties, agencies and various stakeholders on legislative reforms for improved local government election in Nigeria, to inspire public confidence in the electoral processes.

Director of programs, Yiaga Africa, Cynthia Mbamalu, said this in Kaduna during an advocacy roundtable discussion ahead of local government elections in the state.

She said it was pertinent that the government build citizens’ confidence by articulating electoral reform to allow local government autonomy since it was already in the Constitution.

Mbamalu added that all issues must be resolved before the 2027 general elections, adding that the 2023 election was a missed opportunity to build trust and confidence in the process. She called on the citizens, especially youths, not to lose faith assuring that there was still hope to fix the country.

Also speaking, chairperson Kaduna State Independent Electrical Commission Sarari Binta Dikko said there was the need to protect the integrity of Nigerian elections by implementing local government autonomy so as to allow free and fair elections.

Representative of the Secretary to the Kaduna State Government, Ibrahim Sambo stressed the need for full autonomy for local government councils, financing of political parties, improvement of electricity and communication systems, and an end to cross-carpeting to restore sanity in the electoral process.
